Notaku Diaries – Episode 15

What Does Thou Desire?, Homework Time, Bully Beatdown, and We Were Promised Mechas!

Okay, one day late. No problem, no problem, just forgot…but I can assure you that my time was well-spent on Friday: watching Freelance Astronauts videos. Those guys are hilarious. Anyway, time for episode info all about Don East! Before recording this episode, ToonFaithful stole my awesome prank idea and fooled Don into listening to a certain track from the Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt OST. And throughout the entire the recording, while making the occasional bizarre joke that may come from his secret stash of furry porn, the dude was most likely playing Pokemon HeartGold. In fact, he always plays video games during recording: he’s just better at hiding that fact than Toon and I. Lastly, starting with this episode, I’ll be putting anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes worth of extra stuff after the ending theme. It may be from the episode its tied with, like today’s, or be from a different episode. Why am I doing this? Well, we say far too much funny stuff during pre-recording that just can’t be missed. Now music: we kick this episode off 80s-style with Macross by Makoto Fujiwara, which is the theme song for the show of the same name. And we exit with Tomare! by Aya Hirano, which is the closing theme for none other than Haruhi Suzumiya.

Notaku Diaries – Episode 14

Fever Fever Fever, Swimming Swimming Swimming, and Eight Eight Eight

No, your eyes don’t deceive you, five people who actually watch this podcast. Notaku Diaries has finally returned after a two-month hiatus! Doesn’t that just blow your minds? No? Oh well. So what is in this episode of Notaku Diaries? Why, no other than…The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya? BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad? And Outlaw Star? Wow, we haven’t updated in a while, since we’re already talking about Digimon Tamers in our weekend recordings. We have to play quite a bit of catch-up here, so why don’t we have two Notaku updates a week: Mondays and Fridays? That sound good? Great. Well, since it has been two months, I don’t remember any behind-the-scenes details surrounding this little venture. So straight to the music: we courageously (or stupidly) charge into Endless Eight with Super Driver by Aya Hirano, which is used as the theme song for the second season of Haruhi Suzumiya. And we leave for our house on the moon with Tsuki No Ie by Arai Akino, which is used as the second ending theme in Outlaw Star.

Notaku Diaries – Episode 13

Moby Dick, Skinny-dipping, and Broadcast Order Ends

We’re done with the first season of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya! We’ll have to take on Endless Eight for the next two episodes, but we just have to roll with the punches. Oh sweet Suzumiya, we have to roll with the punches. In other news, Chdr wasn’t with us for this episode since he was in Texas planning out his future dictatorship over the state. So we replaced him with Dragonpiece…that’s a fair exchange, right? Don East also joined for the ride, sharing his distaste for BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad. And as a first, we all agreed that Outlaw Star was actually okay this time around. In this episode, we knock the door into perfect free with Hit in the USA by Beat Crusaders, which  was used as the opening theme for the first half of Mongolian Chop Squad. Then we turn away and leave you guys on the lonely rail with God Knows by Aya Hirano, which was used in episode 12 of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.

Notaku Diaries – Episodes 11 and 12

Mood Swings, Everybody Dies, and Space Race

Due to some miscommunication that was probably all my fault, these two episodes didn’t air on Toon Radio last Tuesday as was planned. As for the reason why these episodes would even air back-to-back in the first place is because we weren’t able to record episode 11 on the weekend it was supposed to be recorded, so we recorded them both the following weekend. Though I did send Robert the files for these episodes, a rerun of Episode 10 and an episode of the awesome GeekNights podcast aired in their place. Now time to talk about the episodes themselves: Sketch was on both on these episode, since he really wanted to be on at least one episode where we talk about Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. And who are we to deny him that? He was the one who suggested that we watch the series in the first place. There was also a bit in one of these episodes where we watched this Beat Crusaders music video…something I forgot whether I kept or not. One thing that I do remember cutting is a bit in Episode 12 where I admit that Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt is the first Gainax production that I’ve ever watched. Feel free to ridicule me for that in the comments below.

Literal Star Wars, Gratuitous Engrish, Silent Reading Time, and Die Hard IN SPACE!

EPISODE 11: The opening theme used in this episode is Bōken Desho Desho? (sung by Aya Hirano), which happens to be the opening theme for the first season of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. The closing theme is Hare Hare Yukai, also sung by Aya Hirano, and also from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.
EPISODE 12: The opening theme is Libera Me From Hell, which is sung by Tarantula (from the band Spontania) & Kasahara Yuri, arranged by Iwasaki Taku, and used in the latter half of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. The ending theme is My World Down by the band Meister, and was used as the ending theme for the first half of BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad.– RacattackForce

The Notaku Diaries – Episode 10

Sibling Quibbles, Sexual Harassment, Moonlight Assassin, and Hot for Teacher

Wow, we’ve reached episode ten and…nothing really. Episode 10 isn’t really the biggest benchmark ever when it comes to internet programming. Episode 100: now THAT’S a benchmark. Anyway, while I’m drinking this disgusting can of V8, I suppose I should tell you some behind-the-scenes stuff. Well, guess what? I can’t remember a thing from that recording other than CallGraph failing one or two times, and that huge Nia debate that occurs halfway through. So yeah, nothing to really say other than don’t mess with Nia, or any of the other girls in Don East’s harem. The opening theme is Koi no Mikuru Densetsu by Satoru Kousaki (sung by Yuko Goto), which is used as the opening theme for The Adventures of Mikuru Asahina: Episode 00. The closing theme is Minna no Peace by Afromanic, which is used as the ending theme for post-time skip Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.

P.S. – We’re doing Haruhi Suzumiya in BROADCAST ORDER. Yeah, we are total badasses.

The Notaku Diaries – Episode 8

I’m still worried about putting together Episode 9 at the time of writing. Heck, the only thing on my mind at the moment is how screwed up the recording and the aftermath of that episode was. But I’ll talk about that in full once we actually get to it. For now, let’s focus on Episode 8, in which ToonFaithful was mysteriously captured by ninjas prior to recording, leaving TetrisDork, chdr, and myself to do the podcast…then chdr had to leave to eat dinner. So more than half of the podcast is Tetris and I doing some back and forth. And I don’t think any of were 100% on the day that we recorded: I, at the very least, was recovering from a pretty bad cold that Sunday. But in the end, we managed to have some decent discussion and be funny enough to keep your attention.

The opening theme is Sorairo Days (Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann OP) by Shoko Nakagawa, while the ending theme is Watashi No Ai Wa Chiisaikeredo (Princess Tutu ED) by Ritsuko Okazaki. Stay tuned for Episode Nine, the most chaotic and disastrous recording so far (and that says A LOT).

The Notaku Diaries – Episode 7

The raw cut of this Notaku Diaries episode was just a minute longer than the final cut, which is a stark contrast to the 100+ minutes that Sketch had to edit for this week’s Not Another Old Cartoon Podcast. In non-time restriction related news, Don East sneaks his way in this week to discuss some Gurren Lagann with us, spoiling future plot threads and spewing small doses of profanity. Chdr had to leave after we “discussed” Princess Tutu, but is back in time to talk about our Best/Worst of the Week. Oh, and Tomato isn’t here, but that’s a given at this point. The opening theme is Morning Grace by Ritsuko Okazaki (Princess Tutu OP). The ending theme is Kaze wa Mirai ni Fuku by AKIMA & NEOS (Trigun ED).

The Notaku Diaries -Episode 6

Episode Six marks the first time I’ve cut down an episode due to time restraints, and will very likely not be the last. But don’t worry: all the stuff that I’ll be cutting out will be heard by you guys in the near future, along with some bloopers. As for the content of this episode, well…Tomato’s BACK! But only for this episode. At least, for now. The reason why he won’t be around as often is because of his school’s little High School Musical play, and the fact that the purpose of the Notaku Diaries has changed. So while he’ll likely be back in summer, don’t expect much from him in the next few months. No really interesting facts about this episode other that the raw cut of it was the shortest ever so far (an hour and ten minutes), and I doubt you guys care about that little fact. The opening theme is H.T. by Tsuneo Imahori, while the ending theme is Yochou performed by the Sofia Symphonic Orchestra (used in Princess Tutu).

The Notaku Diaries – Episode 5

Episode Five

The Notaku Diaries word of the day? BULLSHIT. Air was an idiotic series that had writers who completely and utterly refused to play to their strengths. If episodes 11 and 12 were anything to go by, the writers are great at realistic drama. As all of us stated, what could have been at least an entertaining show was ruined by supernatural bullshit. But we go more into that, and also use the word “bullshit” a lot more, in the actual episode.

I’ve also gotta say that I’m really sorry about the delay. Homework and Super Bowl XLV got in the way of me being able to edit this episode and post it on time. Other news related to this episode includes the lack of TomatoSurprise (don’t worry, he returns next week), TetrisDork giving Air the finger, incredible levels of gar, and so much more. The opening theme is Tori No Uta by Lia, while the ending theme is Underground by High Voltage.

The Notaku Diaries – Episode 4 (and Schedule Changes)

Episode Four

There is something major that you guys need to know about the status of The Notaku Diaries. The project will still continue, but due to the busy schedules of those involved, and the desire to have text articles to balance out the podcasts, some schedule changes have been invoked to make the workload easier for all of us to bear. What are these changes? One is that the weekly anime quota for each member has been reduced from nine hours to six hours. In order for that to work, however, we had to get rid of some shows. Out of the 25 anime series that we have yet to watch for The Notaku Diaries, seven have been removed. Those seven are as follows: Clannad, Manabi Straight, Durarara!!, Cyborg 009, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Sailor Moon, and Wolf’s Rain. You can see the reasons why these shows have given the axe from the schedule, as well as some other schedule changes, below the jump. You can also see what the schedule looks like now by going to, well, the schedule page.

With that out of the way, let me say something about this installment of The Notaku Diaries: TomatoSurprise bailed. Just for this episode. It wasn’t because of his hatred of Air, or because of a dying relative. He had to deal with some personal things that I’m not at liberty to discuss. But despite the lack of Tomato, the show had to go on, and we did it without him. What results is a very hilarious, very awkward, but very satisfying episode of TND. Oh, and TetrisDork? He is staying on the project. The opening song is Ride on Shooting Star by The Pillows.
